“Incident” Germany – Beijing: Reactions after the crossing of the Taiwan Strait by a German frigate

A German warship has crossed the Taiwan Strait for the first time in more than 20 years, despite protests from Beijing. The frigate Baden-Württemberg and accompanying supply ship Frankfurt am Main crossed the disputed Strait, which separates China from Taiwan, en route for ships from South Korea to the Philippines. Taiwan’s defense ministry confirmed that the two ships were sailing through the strait from north to south and stressed that it was closely monitoring the surrounding area and airspace. This crossing caused a strong reaction from Beijing, as China considers Taiwan part of its territory and considers the Strait to be in Chinese and not international waters.
