Increase in area and productivity explain record crop projection, says expert

The director of agricultural policy at the National Supply Company (Conab), Sergio de Zen, said in an interview with CNNthis Sunday (10), that “increased productivity”, combined with “increase, although not significant, in planted area” explain the projections for a record national harvest.

On Thursday (7), the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) announced the expectation that the month of March will set a record in the national harvest of cereals, grains, oilseeds (walnuts, pistachios, chestnuts, hazelnuts and almonds) and cotton with 258.9 million tons.

Zen points out that increasing corn production is important. “We have an expectation of placing 3 million tons more than what was pointed out in the previous survey”.

According to him, “the 3 million tons more is equivalent, approximately, to 10% of what Ukraine exports”. In this way, the specialist says that, with the current international scenario, this increase brings a “very large” contribution to composing the global supply of corn.

However, Zen regrets the crop failure that occurred in the southern region of the country. “Between the end of last year and the beginning of this year, we observed many climatic problems in southern Brazil. We expected to produce 140 million tons of soy and we are going to produce something around 122 million tons”. Therefore, the expert explains that the uncertain international scenario also ends up “pressing oilseed prices”.
