Some coastal shipping companies have already increased their ferry ticket prices by around 10% to 12% in order to meet the growing operating costs of ships due to the increase in international oil prices due to the war in Ukraine. / 3, while this increase in some other companies will be on the tickets from April 1. Brent North Sea crude for May delivery closed at $ 115.62 a barrel (+ 7.12% on Friday), the highest level in ten days. US crude for April delivery also rose 7.08% to close at $ 112.12 a barrel.
As mentioned by executives of shipping companies in APE-MPE, the ton of Fuel Oil (FO), for a conventional coastal ship, from 600 dollars per ton in December 2021 reached yesterday 21/3/2022 approximately 1,050 euros per ton while the high sulfur Fuel Oil (FO) fuel had reached $ 750 per ton on 11/3 this year.
The marine diesel fuel MGO (for speedboats) which is a fuel different from that consumed by conventional ships reached on 21/3/2002 $ 1,250 per tonne from $ 680 which was in December 2021.
Indicatively, they pointed out that a ship that runs on the line from Piraeus to Crete with Fuel Oil (FO), currently needs about 40 tons of fuel the route costs about 40,000 euros, while a ship on the line Piraeus-Santorini needs about 70 tons of fuel for a route at a cost of 80,000 euros.
The Coast Guard Association (SEEN) in a recent meeting with the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Giannis Plakiotakis proposed a specific package, while the competent minister promised to discuss the issue with the relevant ministries.
Among those proposed by the coasters are the immediate increase of the companies ‘liquidity from what the state owes to the shipping companies from subsidized lines that have already been executed, subsidization of employers’ contributions as was done during the covid-19 pandemic, imposition of a ceiling on Marine fuel prices at the average price of last December, reduction of VAT on ferry tickets from 12% to 6% and increase by 30% on rents for barren one-year lines.
It is noted that all barren lines are included in the Public Investment Program.
In the one-year 58 contracts for the coverage of barren lines, the rents are specific and there is no fuel clause, however in the multi-year there is a fuel clause that at the current average will reach an increase of 8.5% in each ton of oil.
For the multi-year contracts, which are 19 in number, the increase of the subsidy due to the increases in fuel will be done retroactively from 1/11/2021 and with a decision of the competent Minister of Shipping.
The free lines are currently over 200.
It is noted, however, that the staffs of the shipping companies in order to face the ever-increasing cost of shipping fuel have already proceeded to reduce the speed of the ships, to merge itineraries but also to dilute the frequency of the itineraries.
Some companies have already made cuts that they do not consider to have much passenger traffic at this time.
Indicatively, some lines in which the price of the ferry ticket has already increased from 18/3 are the following:
– Piraeus-Paros, from 38.50 euros the individual ticket for economy class to 42.50 euros
– Piraeus-Mykonos, from 40 euros the individual ticket to 44 euros
– Piraeus-Syros, from 35 euros the individual ticket to 38.50 euros
– Piraeus-Patmos, from 43 euros the individual ticket to 47.50 euros.
Similar increases of about 10% have been made in vehicles.
Indicatively, we also mention increases in the prices of ferry tickets that have been made by some ferry companies from 1/04.
– On the Rafina-Andros line: From the 20.50 individual ticket (financial position) that is today, from 1/4 it goes up to 23 euros, while for the car from 45 euros that it is now, it will go up to 48 euros.
