Incredible images in Japan – Roads opened and buildings collapsed from the powerful earthquake

Major damages are recorded in Japan by strong earthquake of more than seven degrees on the Richter scale on New Year's Day, with photos and videos circulating showing roads open and buildings collapsed.

According to the AFP agency, strong earthquakes hit central Japan today, with the most important occurring at 16:10 (09:10 Greek time) in the northeastern tip of the peninsula, and its magnitude was initially recorded at 7.4 degrees before being revised upwards to 7.5 degrees according to the US Geological Survey (USGS) and 7.6 degrees according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

According to what the Athens Agency reports, earthquakes struck shortly before or shortly after in the same area: A first of magnitude 5.7 at 09:06 inland, another of magnitude 6.1 at 09:18, then three more of magnitude 4.5 to 4.8 degrees until 09:16.

Images broadcast by NHK television showed buildings collapsing in Ishikawa, and tremors shaking buildings in the capital Tokyo on the opposite coast.

More than 36,000 households were left without electricity in Ishikawa and Toyama prefectureselectricity provider Hokuriku Electric Power said.

Earlier, the Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, called on the government to provide clear guidance to citizens regarding the earthquake and tsunamito control the extent of damage and ensure that citizens are evacuated to safe areas.
