India: 15 dead in north from monsoon floods

At least 15 people have died in India in monsoon-triggered floods and landslides in the foothills of the Himalayas, authorities said today.

Floods and landslides are common in India during the monsoon season (June-September) and according to experts, climate change is increasing their frequency, severity and sudden nature.

Rescuers rushed to Mandi district in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh, where floods washed away two houses and killed eight people, according to a government statement.

Landslides and floods claimed the lives of another seven people in the state, the statement added.

Television images showed part of a railway bridge swept away by the deluge in neighboring Kangra district.

In Hamipur district, flash floods trapped 19 people on the roofs of local buildings, who were later rescued.

Schools were closed in the most affected areas.

The state of Himachal Pradesh, popular with tourists, is known for its snow-capped mountains.

In July, eight people died after flash floods hit a pilgrim camp in neighboring Kashmir.

In June, rainfall was heavy in remote areas of north-east India. Nearly 40 people have been killed in a landslide that submerged a camp housing railway employees and army reservists in Manipur state.
