The year 2024 was India’s hottest since 1901, the country’s weather service said today, with sweltering temperatures set in a global trend of extreme weather caused by climate change. “2024 was the warmest year on record since 1901,” Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general of the India Meteorological Department, said during a press conference. “The average annual land surface air temperature in India in 2024 was 0.65 degrees above the 1991-2020 long-term average,” he added. In 2024, India experienced the longest heat wave ever recorded, with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius. A heat wave in New Delhi in May saw the mercury rise to a record high in the capital equaling the 49.2 degrees Celsius recorded in 2022.
