India and Pakistan agreed with a “total and immediate ceasefire” after a night of US-mediated negotiations, President Donald Trump wrote on his social Truth platform on Saturday (10).
“After a long night of US-mediated negotiations, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed with a total and immediate ceasefire,” said the US President.
“Congratulations to both countries for using common sense and great intelligence,” he added.
None of the sides also commented on Trump’s statement.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said India and Pakistan showed “prudence” by agreeing with the ceasefire after a series of deadly attacks that left them close to a larger conflict.
“I am pleased to announce that the governments of India and Pakistan have agreed with an immediate ceasefire and began negotiations on a large set of questions in a neutral place,” Rubio wrote on Saturday at X (former Twitter).
Rubio praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Shehbaz Sharif for “his wisdom, prudence, and stadism in choosing the path of peace.”
Earlier on Saturday, Rubio spoke with the foreign ministers of both countries, the State Department said.
US Vice President Jd Vance, who a few days ago stated that the conflict between India and Pakistan was “not our own”, also shared Trump’s announcement.
In an interview with Fox News on Thursday, Vance minimized the potential of influence of the US as the conflict between India and Pakistan worsened.
“What we can do is try to encourage these people to calm down a little, but we will not get involved in the middle of a war that is fundamentally not our own and has nothing to do with the US’s ability to control it,” Vance told Fox News on Thursday.
“You know, the United States cannot send the Indians to lower the weapons. We can’t send the Pakistanis to lower the weapons. And so we will continue to pursue this subject by diplomatic,” said Vance.
Vance shared a screen capture of Trump’s post on Truth Social announcing the ceasefire on Saturday, but no longer provided comments immediately.
Pakistan confirms ceasefire
Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq said that Pakistan and India agreed with a ceasefire “with immediate effect,” confirming the announcement of US President Donald Trump.
“Pakistan has always struggled for peace and security in the region, without compromising its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he added, in a publication in X.
Indian sources confirm agreement to CNN
India said that an “understanding” was achieved between New Delhi and Islamabad to interrupt the military action that broke out between the two neighbors, according to sources on the Indian side.
“The suspension of shots and military actions between India and Pakistan was right between the two countries,” a source said.
They continued to say that the Director-General of Pakistan Military Operations (DGMO) began a call on Saturday afternoon, “after which discussions occurred and the understanding was reached.”
“There is no decision to maintain negotiations on any other question anywhere else,” the source added.
