India and Russia sign trade and arms deals during Putin’s visit

Russia e India signed a series of arms and trade agreements during a visit by President Vladimir Putin to New Delhi for talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, including one that will allow India to produce more than 600,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles.

Putin traveled to India with defense and foreign ministers for the visit, in which the two countries strengthened ties with a pact of military and technical cooperation by 2031 and a pledge to increase annual trade to $30 billion by 2025 .

The Russian president is visiting India at a time of tension in the relationship between Russia and the United States, which are also key allies of the Indian government and express reservations about the growing military cooperation between India and Russia.

A joint statement published after the talks said that Russia and India “reiterate their intention to strengthen defense cooperation, including joint development in the production of military equipment“.
In addition to the agreement for India to produce AK-203 assault rifles, Russia has said it is interested in continuing to supply air defense systems with S-400 missiles.

Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said the two countries had signed 28 investment agreements, including in the steel, shipbuilding, coal and energy sectors, and that a 2018 contract for the S-400 systems is being currently deployed.
