India: Death toll from floods and landslides rises to 50

At least 50 people have died in floods and landslides caused by monsoons in northern and eastern India, according to the Hindustan Times.

Most of the victims (36) are from the state of Himachal Pradesh, where the fate of five people is still unknown. Houses, roads and bridges were destroyed, while tourists were stranded in some communities.

Floods and landslides are common in India during the monsoon season (June-September) and according to experts, climate change is increasing their frequency and intensity.

In July, eight people died after flash floods hit a pilgrim camp in neighboring Kashmir.

In June, rainfall was heavy in remote areas of north-east India. Nearly 40 people have been killed in a landslide that submerged a camp housing railway employees and army reservists in Manipur state.
