India: Eight workers killed by avalanche in Himalayas

At least eight Indian workers were killed and six others were seriously injured avalanche στα Himalayas, near the border with China, as it became known today from official sources.

The avalanche hit the Chamoli area of the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, trapping hundreds of workers. It was caused by the collapse of a Himalayan glacier late Friday night.

In February, an avalanche attributed to climate change killed at least 202 people in the same area.

The head of Tsamoli’s emergency services said a rescue operation was under way in the Niti Valley, an isolated area near the border with China. “Eight bodies have been identified so far,” while 385 people have been safely evacuated, Swati S. Bandoria told AFP.

Authorities are using helicopters to evacuate workers. But the operation was stopped on Friday night, due to snowfall and torrential rain.

Hundreds of workers are paving the way for the region, in a bid to boost India’s military infrastructure along its borders. Experts estimate that the works are causing landslides and avalanches.

A video released by local authorities, taken after the disaster, shows a giant river of snow in a gorge, which has completely covered much of a road in a mountain pass.
