India has recorded 22,775 new COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
The data show that densely populated large cities, such as the national capital New Delhi, the financial center of Mumbai and Kolkata in the east, are recording the largest increases.
In the eastern state of West Bengal, infections have reached 3,450 in the last 24 hours with at least 1,950 cases reported in Kolkata, the capital. Sixteen infections with the Omicron variant have been reported in West Bengal.
Kolkata City Council has declared 17 restricted zones in residential complexes where more than five infections have been recorded. People living in these areas are not allowed to leave the area to limit the spread of the disease.
Azoi Chakrobarti, the city’s director of health services, said he was meeting with private hospitals to ensure the facility was ready to handle the growing number of infections.
India experienced a devastating second wave of COVID-19 last year, when the daily average of new infections reached about 400,000.
The number has dropped significantly since then. For many months the national record remained well below the 10,000 infections per day.
Now officials and medical officials fear that the Omicron variant of the coronavirus could trigger a third wave of the disease.
