India: New national record with 3,689 coronavirus deaths in 24 hours

More than 19.5 million people have been infected with the coronavirus in India, where in the previous 24 hours 392,488 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed in the laboratory, a number slightly lower than the world record of the previous one, when almost 402,000 were diagnosed.

During the same period, 3,689 patients with COVID-19 – a new national tragic record – died in the pandemic coronavirus to reach 215,542 dead. If the death toll continues to rise at this rate, India will soon overtake Mexico and be ranked third in the macabre world rankings. The giant Asian country has the second highest infection rate in the world, after the United States.

Experts consider the official data to be undervalued.

The selected active cases have now exceeded 3.3 million.

The federal government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi rules out the possibility of imposing a national lockdown to reduce cases. In New Delhi, a weekly lockdown has been imposed until May 3rd.

The capital, which is among the outbreaks of the pandemic, recorded 25,219 cases and 412 deaths in the past 24 hours.

In the midst of a health crisis, five states today began the process of counting the local elections held in March and early April, when India was already hit by the second, sweeping wave of the pandemic. The election results – in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Punjab – are being touted by some analysts as a mini-referendum to tackle the epidemic by Mr Monti and the Baratiya Janata Party (BJP). right).

Mr Monti has been criticized for focusing on campaigning rather than strengthening the health system, and because his government has ignored warnings that a more contagious strain of the new coronavirus was spreading in the country. Some scholars also point out that the pre-election rallies and religious celebrations in which hundreds of thousands of people took part significantly contributed to the second wave.

The immunization campaign was expanded to include the entire population over the age of 18 on Saturday, but authorities in many states say they do not have enough vaccine doses to meet the needs of the 600 million beneficiaries.

To date, more than 156 million doses of vaccine have been administered in the country.
