India: Nine dead and eight injured in a hospital fire

Nine people died and eight others were seriously injured in a fire that broke out today at a private hospital in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

Around 150 people are believed to have been inside the three-storey hospital in the city of Chambalpur, 1,094 km from Mumbai, when the fire broke out. According to the local police chief, the extrication operation has been completed and there are no people trapped in the building.

Ninety firefighters battled the flames and managed to put out the fire, which broke out probably due to a short circuit, according to the first estimates of the Indian authorities.

Federal state authorities announced that compensation of $6,332 will be given to the families of each of the victims of the fire.
