India: Over 200 dead and 800 injured in train collision

At least 207 people were killed and about 850 injured by the collision of two passenger trains yesterday Friday (2/6) in the state of Odisha of the east of Indiaaccording to a newer report released by the authorities.

The operation of rescue crews at the scene of the tragedy is ongoing and there are fears that the final death toll could be much higher. Images from the scene of the tragedy show the frantic efforts of rescue crews to locate survivors among the battered sheet metal.

More than 200 ambulances were mobilized to transport the injured to hospitals. It is estimated that around 850 people were transported injured, some of them in critical condition.

The Coromandel Express, running the route from Kolkata to Chennai, collided with another passenger train, the Howrah Superfast Express, near Balasore, railway officials said. The second train derailed and its carriages became entangled with the wreckage of the first, according to South Eastern Railway.
