Russia has begun delivering S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems to India, Russian news agencies reported today, citing Dmitry Sugayev, the head of Russia’s defense cooperation service.
Exports of the reported Russian defense systems carry the risk of US sanctions against India and the implementation of relevant legislation passed in 2017, aimed at preventing countries from buying Russian weapons systems.
“The first deliveries have already begun,” he told the Russian Interfax news agency, citing Sugajev and his remarks today at an aerospace trade show in Dubai.
He said the first batch of S-400 systems would arrive in India by the end of the year.
The $ 5.5 billion deal was signed in 2018 for the delivery of five long-range missile systems, which India has said it needs in order to counter China’s defense threat.
India faces threat of US sanctions under Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) Moscow’s action against Ukraine, its involvement in the 2016 US presidential election and its assistance to Syria.
New Delhi has said it has strategic cooperation with both the US and Russia, while Washington has informed India that it is unlikely to be exempt from CAATSA sanctions.
