India said on Friday it had accidentally fired a missile into Pakistan because of a “technical malfunction” during routine maintenance.
“On the 9th of March [quarta-feira] 2022, during routine maintenance, a technical malfunction led to the accidental firing of a missile,” the government said in a statement.
“We know that the missile landed in an area of Pakistan. While the incident is deeply regrettable, it is also a matter of relief that there was no loss of life as a result of the accident,” India said in the statement.
India and Pakistan agreed to cease attacks along a disputed Kashmir border last year. The nuclear-armed neighbors signed a ceasefire agreement along the Line of Control (LoC) – the de facto border in the Kashmir region – in 2003, but the truce was fraying until the ceasefire was signed.
