India suffers floods as cyclone approaches; two people died

At least two people died after a flood hit southern India this Monday (04). Authorities warned of the arrival of a cyclone within the next 24 hours.

Cyclone Michaung is expected to hit the south of the country this Tuesday morning (05). According to meteorological authorities, winds of more than 110 km/h are expected. Parts of the country may receive winds of up to 200 km/h.

The region is already hit by heavy rains. Two people died after a wall collapsed in the state of Tamil Nadu. In Chennai, the state capital, cars were swept away by water.

The place is known for being the center of electronic product production in the country. Foxconn and Pegatron stopped production of iPhones because of the rain.

One of India’s busiest airports has been taken over by water. Landing and take-off runways were flooded and planes were underwater.

Several cities in the south of the country were flooded. Power grids were damaged because of the winds. Local authorities have asked residents at risk – who live in coastal regions – to leave their homes in the coming days.

Three cities closed schools, businesses and banks because of the bad weather.

This is not the first time that the country has suffered from climate events of this type. In 2015, more than 290 people died because of floods.
