India: Thirteen civilians shot dead by security forces

Thirteen civilians were killed in Nagaland, in the northeast India, by security forces, who opened fire on a truck and then on a group of people protesting the incident, police announced today.

According to the police officer, Six workers were killed on their way home from a truck in the village of Otting in an ambush by security forces believed to be related to a rebel group. which had been reported in the area.

Relatives of the victims, who went to look for them, found the bodies and then went to the security forces to ask for explanations.

“Then a confrontation broke out between the two sides and members of the security forces opened fire, killing 7 other people.”, clarified the police official.

In a statement, the Indian military said the ambush was based on “reliable information” indicating the presence of an armed rebel group in the area.

A member of the security forces was also killed and several others were injured in the incident, the army added in a statement. “The cause of this sad loss of human life is the subject of investigation at the highest level and the most appropriate measures will be taken in accordance with the law,” the statement said.

Nagalad’s prime minister, Neifi Rio, has called for calm and announced an investigation into the “highly condemned” incident, while Indian Interior Minister Amit Shah has vowed to bring justice to the families.

Nagaland and other states in the eastern tip of India have for decades been the scene of riots by various separatist or separatist insurgent groups as well as armed tribal groups.

The situation has calmed down in recent years, following the conclusion of several peace agreements with New Delhi, but a significant Indian guard remains in the area.
