Indian capital to ban fireworks over pollution

India’s capital, New Delhi, will ban fireworks to alleviate the impact of pollution during winter for residents who are hardest hit. The move is likely to take some of the fun out of the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, which takes place next month.

The city of around 20 million people is the most polluted capital in the world. The air becomes particularly bad from mid-December to February, as the cold air traps dust, vehicle emissions and smoke from burning stubble in nearby fields.

“To save people from the danger of pollution in Delhi, like last year, this time also the production, storage, sale and use of all kinds of fireworks are being completely banned,” said the city’s environment minister. , Gopal Rai, in a post on Twitter this Wednesday (7).

“This time there will also be a ban on online sale and delivery of fireworks in Delhi.”

Rai did not say exactly when the ban would go into effect, but for the past two years, similar bans have been imposed before Diwali, when people set off fireworks, filling the air with smoke.

Rai’s office said the date of the restriction would be announced this week. He said it would end on January 1st.

Some Hindus say the ban on fireworks during Diwali is an attempt to interfere with their religion.
