Indian lawmaker calls to ban cryptocurrency

Indian lawmaker Meenakshi Lekhi said crypto assets should be banned if they are used to damage India’s sovereignty and integrity.

Speaking at the 6th Global Technology Summit, Meenakshi Lekhi stressed that if cryptocurrencies are used to finance cyber attacks or other illegal activities, such as drugs or human trafficking, then they need to be banned.

She believes that cryptocurrency companies are engaged in illegal activities and do not benefit the country. According to Lekhi, “platforms and cryptocurrency exchanges are owned by a group of people who try to avoid paying taxes by taking money out of the country and not benefiting it.”

The politician urged the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Information Technology of India to carefully study all aspects of the illegal use of cryptocurrencies and develop tools to prevent them.

As a reminder, India has postponed the adoption of the cryptocurrency regulation law until 2022. Before adopting the bill, the government of the country wants to study the world practice of overseeing the industry. Now Indian politicians are actively making changes to the proposed bill.

At the same time, the Indian opposition has called on the government to clarify its attitude towards cryptocurrencies after the hacking of the Twitter account of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Fraudsters announced on his behalf about the legalization of bitcoin in the country and the “distribution” of 500 BTC.
