Indian Prime Minister’s tour in three EU countries

German Chancellor Olaf Soltz, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and their ministers are meeting today to discuss Russia’s trade, business and invasion of Ukraine.

Dialogue on the war in Ukraine is expected to be difficult. New Delhi has so far refused to condemn the Russian invasion and impose sanctions on Moscow.

Mr Monti will be received with military honors at the chancellery, where he will have a private discussion with Mr Soltz. The Indian Prime Minister and the German Chancellor will then chair a meeting of the two countries’ ministers, before giving a press conference.

Messrs. Monti and Soltz are also expected to meet with business leaders as they work to push for an EU-India trade deal.

Germany is India’s largest trading partner in the EU and its sixth most important trading partner worldwide, according to the Foreign Ministry in Berlin.

The meeting of the heads of government of the two countries and their ministers is the sixth of its kind. The previous one was held in India in November 2019, before the new coronavirus pandemic broke out.

Contacts of this nature indicate the conclusion of closer relations between partners. Mr Soltz recently agreed with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to launch such regular consultations.

The Indian Prime Minister will also travel to Denmark (tomorrow Tuesday) and France (the day after Wednesday).

In Copenhagen, Mr Monti will take part in India ‘s second meeting with the Nordic countries (Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland).

Mr Monti will make the final stop of his European tour in Paris, where he will meet with President Emanuel Macron, who has just been re-elected with the far-right candidate Marine Le Pen.

France and India are celebrating 75 years since the restoration of their diplomatic relations.
