The Maharashtra state government has switched to blockchain to implement the Digital India program.
The authorities were the first to issue caste certificates through Polygon to citizens living in the village of Etapalli. The state government has partnered with LegitDoc. A total of 65,000 certificates are currently in the verification process.
The local government, co-authored with LegitDoc CEO Neil Martis, released an article stating that certificates should be issued to 1.1 million low-income residents of the Gadchiroli area.
This way of verifying certificates prevents counterfeit attempts by scammers who pretend to be poor in order to receive government benefits. The article highlights the importance of Web3 protocols for protecting a large number of citizens.
As part of the Digital India initiative, LegitDoc extracts data from the state portal MahaOnline and uploads it to the Polygon blockchain on a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. After that, the system generates a QR code and certificates, which can later be verified by various government agencies.
In the middle of last year, Maharashtra authorities, together with LegitDoc, used the Ethereum blockchain to authenticate educational diplomas. This should minimize the need for manual verification and prevent attempts to forge the document.
