Indigenous activism on social networks brings different realities together, says communicator

Indigenous activist and communicator Alice Pataxó, 20, believes that the internet “brings the possibility of understanding the struggle of the other and the different demands” in the context of different communities and peoples.

In an interview with CNN radio, in CNN in Plural, she stated that the creation of indigenous content, from those who experience and share reality, brings a sensitivity that “we want to pass on to those who accompany us, this understanding, they are different realities that can be approached.”

Alice says that she started early, under the influence of her mother, who was part of the indigenous leaders and was a teacher at the school where she studies. “This encouraged me a lot to participate actively and seek my individuality. I found myself a lot through social media, using it as a tool to talk about activism.”

“Many communicators do this, it is a growing and recent movement”, he added.

The activist believes that talking about indigenous communication brings the perspective of looking where she lives. “We have to think collectively and it is very important for us how we present the community.”

“People are used to terms – like Indians and tribes – that don’t suggest who we are, it always bothered us, but there was little room for discussion,” he said.

However, that has changed: “A movement begins to emerge that we understand each other as communities, removing stereotypes of tribal peoples and bringing communities ahead of technologies that act in favor of their own culture, without losing who we are.”

“We speak many languages, groups, which have their differences and we want to show that, we want Brazilians to know who we are”, he added.
