One indigenous person died and six others were injured during a confrontation with the police in the municipality of Amambai, in Mato Grosso do Sul, on the border with Paraguay. Three police officers also received hospital care.
The village community claims that there are more deaths, information that has not been confirmed by the police. According to the Indigenous Missionary Council, the conflict began on Friday (24), after about 30 indigenous people occupied an area of a farm in the region, considered by them to be an ancestral area.
The Mato Grosso do Sul Public Security Secretariat stated that the riot squad was called to contain the invasion, in an action that involved at least 100 agents. According to the state, a helicopter used in the operation was shot at.
In a note, the General Assembly of the Guarani Kaiowá People asked that measures be taken to guarantee the right to life and that the demarcation of land be carried out on the spot.
