Indirect for exes and plagiarism accusations: understand controversy over Shakira’s music

Shakira’s new song with Argentine producer Bizarrap, “Bzrp Music Session vol 53”, has sparked all kinds of debate.

From the discussion on whether or not the singer should vent, to the legal field: was there plagiarism of a melody in the song or not?

Singer Briella shared a video on the social network Twitter where she compares ‘Solo Tú’ — released in June 2022 — with Shakira’s new song.

The Colombian’s fans reacted in the post defending the artist.

This is a common exercise for social media, and for fans. Watch the videos below and compare the possible similarities — or references — in the songs.

Other cases of plagiarism

The Colombian singer has already been involved in other cases of plagiarism. The most famous was the trumpet in Jerry Rivera’s “Amores como el nuestro” in “Hips Don’t Lie” (by Shakira) — used legally.

The other song, “Loca”, had a court decision that, firstly, determined that there was copyright infringement. But later, the courts reversed that decision, finding that the author lied to the court and falsified the contents of a cassette tape that he presented as proof of his authorship.

Success in 3 days

Shakira and Argentine rapper Bizarrap have already reached over 113 million views on YouTube in three days with “Bizarrap Music Sessions Vol. 53”. In less than 24 hours, the song reached nearly 34 million views.

In this song, Shakira launches phrases directed at her ex-husband, the former Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué, such as “so much so that you gave yourself as a champion and when I needed you, you gave your worst version” or “I understood that it’s not my fault they criticize you, I just make music, sorry I sneezed on you”.

The interpreter goes even further and leaves no doubt about her intentions when she says “this is for me to mortify you, chew and swallow, swallow and chew” or “women no longer cry, women earn”. With these phrases and a few more from her new song, Shakira is undoubtedly a trendsetter.

Shakira and Piqué confirmed their separation in June 2022. They had been together for 11 years and have two children.

“We regret to confirm that we are parting ways. For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy. Thank you for understanding,” says the statement released by the former couple.
