An oil spill was located in the area where its Navy is Indonesia lost touch with one submarine, off Bali, as announced by the country’s Ministry of Defense, reports APE.
Around 7 a.m. local time, a helicopter involved in the search spotted an oil slick at the spot where the submarine had sunk, the announcement said.
Earlier, The Navy announced that it was looking for a submarine, with a crew of 53, with which it lost contact early this morning, after participating in exercises in the offshore zone of Bali. The KRI Nanggala 402 submarine was located at a depth of 700 meters, in the north of the island, according to the commander of the armed forces, Hadji Jajando. After 3 a.m., local time (21.00 on Tuesday, Greek time) there was no contact with his base, said Navy spokesman Admiral Julius Vitzotzono. “We know this zone, but it has enough depth,” he added.
Indonesia has requested international assistance and many countries, including Singapore, Australia and India, have said they are willing to participate in the investigation, according to the ministry.
Indonesia has a total of five submarines, made in Germany and South Korea. The KRI Nanggala 402 was built in 1978 and later modernized.
