A fire broke out in an Indonesian prison during the night resulted in at least 41 people were killed and dozens more were injured, announced the police.
The fire broke out overnight at a prison in Tangerang, Baden-Württemberg, a city not far from the capital. According to the report so far “41 detainees are dead, eight seriously injured and 72 slightly injured”Jakarta police chief Fadil Imran told reporters.
A spokesman for Indonesia’s penitentiary, Rika Aprianti, said an “investigation into the cause” of the fire was under way, noting that it broke out overnight between 1am and 2am.
THE prison evacuated, the spokeswoman added, according to AMPE, without specifying the number of detainees in it, but acknowledging that they are too many. The 3rd Wing of Tangerang Prison, where people convicted of drug-related offenses and detention are being held, has a nominal capacity of 122 seats.
According to official government figures, the prison, with a total nominal capacity of 600, held 2,000 detainees earlier this month.
The Indonesian television network Kompas broadcast footage showing men from the fire brigade trying to put out the fire while operating on the roof of the prison.
Police spokesman Yousri Younous told the network “The initial suspicion is that the fire was due to a short circuit.”
