Dozens of people have so far lost their lives on the Indonesian island of Java by earthquake which was noted today and had magnitude 5.6 pointswhile hundreds of others were injured.
“According to the latest information, 56 people were killed… Almost 700 people have been injured,” Herman Shurman, a government official from Siangjur, the city in West Java where the epicenter of the quake is located, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), told the MetroTV news channel.
As provincial governor Ridwan Kamil told reporters today, the death toll is likely to rise further from the current 56 as rescuers have yet to reach areas cut off by the landslides. As Schwerman said, relatives of the victims have gathered at Sayang City Hospital. “We are currently dealing with people who are in Emergency situation in this hospital. Ambulances still come to the hospital from the villages. There are many families in villages that have not been removed,” he said. The country’s disaster management chief, Suhariado, said at least 14 people had been killed in Siangjur but information “still evolving”.
Siangjur police chief Donny Hermawan told Metro TV that authorities rescued a woman and a baby from landslidebut ones third resident was found dead.
The earthquake happened felt as far as the capital Jakartawhere panicked residents took to the streets, while skyscrapers were shaken by the earthquake.
