Indonesia: Eleven teenagers drowned in river during excursion

Eleven teenagers they drowned while two more are in critical condition after attempting to cross a pedestrian river, during an excursion, to Indonesia, announced on Friday (15/10) a rescue service official.

About 150 members of a Muslim scout group, aged 13 to 15, were walking along the banks of the Cileuleur River when 21 of them tried to cross him on foot, AFP reports.

Residents of the area managed to save them ten, said Supriono, a search and rescue officer in Badug, a town in western Java. “Two students (…) are in critical condition in the hospital, while 11 were found dead,” he added, speaking to the same Media.

The authorities are conducting research about the circumstances of the accident and in order to verify that all participants in this trip were found.

The students took part in this excursion to clean up on the banks of the river, despite warnings from the National Disaster Prevention Agency.

Hiking along the rivers is prohibited for children and adolescents during their period rain, starting in late November.
