Indonesia: Further expansion of restrictions due to outbreak

THE Indonesia extended today all the restrictions that have come into force in the country, to deal with the spread of the highly contagious Delta strain of the new coronavirus, while the government hinted that at the front of the epidemic the worst may not have come yet. Although drastic restrictions are already in place on the islands of Java and Bali, the new measures announced today, which vary by region, will be implemented. in dozens of cities in Sumatra, in the western part of the country, as far as West Papua, in the eastern part, reports ΑΠΕ.

“Cases are on the rise in other areas and we need to be careful not to make hospitals vulnerable,” he said. Minister Erlanga Hartarto, clarifying that the restrictions will be in force until July 20. The health system of the fourth most populous country in the world has been flooded with an influx of patients. Yesterday, Tuesday, the government announced 31,189 new cases of coronavirus, record number, and 728 new deaths from COVID-19. This mortality rate is seven times higher than it was less than a month ago.

The new restrictive zones announced today record far fewer cases than Java, where half the country’s population lives. However in these areas, health services are much less developed and an explosion would shake the entire system much faster, Hartarto warned. “The structures in these areas are limited and already overloaded,” he noted. The restrictions mainly concern the obligation for the staff in non-core sectors to work from home, as well as the restriction of the opening hours of the shops and restaurants. Mosques and churches will also close in the hardest hit areas.
