Indonesia: Investigators attribute Boeing crash with 62 dead to mechanical problems and pilots

Indonesian researchers attributed the accident to a series of mechanical problems and negligence on the part of the pilots plane crash that killed 62 people in 2021 off Jakarta to a series of mechanical problems and pilot negligence.

The Boeing 737-500 of Sriwijaya Air dived from almost 3,000 meters into the seaoff the Indonesian capital, just minutes after taking off from Jakarta on January 9, 2021.

In its final report, Indonesia’s National Aviation Safety Commission (KNKT) pointed out, as reported by the Athens News Agency, many factors contributed to the crash, mainly mechanical problems.

Malfunction of the twin-engine aircraft’s auto-acceleration system caused it to spin to the left, KNKT said in a statement.

But before the crushthe aircraft, which had been flying for 26 years, had deviated significantly from its course.

Lack of vigilance on the part of the pilots

The investigators concluded that there was a “lack of vigilance” on the part of the pilots, which prevented them from noticing this anomaly, “which led to inappropriate response actions”.

In their report, the researchers also cited the absence of a regulatory framework and official guidelines to explain the lack of skills and knowledge of pilots to react to such situations.

According to a preliminary investigation conducted after the crash, crews on previous flights had described the acceleration system as “unusable,” adding that it had been repaired several times before this last, fatal flight.

THE Indonesia it is a vast archipelago, with a mediocre record in aviation security despite being heavily dependent on this mode of transport to connect its thousands of islands.

The country has seen three major plane crashes since 2014. Before the one in January 2021, 189 people died in October 2018 when a Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX crashed into the sea. In 2014, an Air Asia A320 crashed into the Java Sea, killing all 162 on board.
