Three children have died in Indonesia from a mysterious liver disease, bringing to four deaths from acute hepatitis of unknown origin worldwide, the country’s health ministry has announced.
The three children died in April in Jakarta hospitals after showing some symptoms of this mysterious disease.
This hepatitis mainly affects children under 10 years of age. Its main symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and inflammation of the liver. One death has been reported so far.
The three children from Indonesia were 2, 8 and 11 years old. They developed fever, jaundice, convulsions and loss of consciousness, according to ministry spokeswoman City Nadia Tarmizi. “So far we suspect that these are cases of acute hepatitis but we have to confirm that they are not due to the known viruses that cause hepatitis A, B, C, D and Rb,” he added.
The ministry advised parents to take their children to a hospital immediately if they had any suspicious symptoms.
Earlier in the day, the World Health Organization said at least 228 suspected cases of hepatitis had been reported in 20 countries and more than 50 more were under investigation.
The emergence of a potentially new disease affecting only young children has caused alarm in the medical world. The WHO spoke of an “unexpected, significant increase” in cases of children in good health in Britain, Ireland and the Netherlands.
