Three earthquakes occurred today in Indonesia, with the third causing concern. The first tremor was 5.2 magnitude, followed by a second 5.4 magnitude and a third 6.1 magnitude. The Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) noted that there was no risk of a tsunami.
The third tremor was felt by residents of the Medawai Islands, the provincial capital of Padang and the surrounding mountainous region of Bukittinggi, the disaster management agency said in a statement. According to her, there are no reports of casualtiesbut slight damage has been caused to buildings on Shiberut Island.
An official of the local disaster response agency in the Medaway Islands also told Reuters that residents of some villages were moved to higher altitude and that a temple, a school and a health facility suffered minor damage.
The disaster management agency advised the world not to panic and warned of possible aftershocks, APE-MPE reports.
More than 1,100 people had lost their lives and many more had been injured by earthquake 7.6 degrees that had rocked Padang in 2009, causing widespread devastation.
Indonesia is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates meet and there is intense seismic activity.
