Indonesia volcano erupts again and death toll rises to 22

A volcano in Indonesia was active again this Monday (6), spewing clouds of hot ash two days after a powerful eruption, which left people dead and missing.

Mount Semeru, the highest mountain on the island of Java, erupted on Saturday (4), sending a column of ash into the sky that covered the surrounding villages.

The death toll rose to 22 on Monday, while 27 are missing, Indonesia’s Disaster Mitigation Agency said.

The new eruption was confirmed by Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation through its Twitter account, warning of continued seismic activity.

“Semeru is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia,” a representative of the Semeru Volcano Observatory told Reteurs. “It will remain active”, he added.

Some residents have returned to their homes to check their belongings and heads of cattle, but the observatory’s recommendation is that people keep a safe distance from the volcano.
