Indonesian MP rules out death penalty and asks Brazilian for 12 years in prison for drug trafficking

Indonesia’s Public Prosecutor’s Office has asked for 12 years in prison for the Brazilian arrested in the country for drug trafficking, ruling out the possibility of the death penalty or life imprisonment.

The hearing for the defense’s closing arguments is scheduled for next Tuesday (30).

Manuela Vitória de Araújo, 19 years old, is in the Kerobokan women’s prison.

Previously, lawyer Davi Lira da Silva told CNN that Manuela’s family was terrified, since even the Justice understood that the Brazilian was used as a “mule” by a drug trafficking network, the country’s legislation for this type of crime is very strict.

Indonesia is one of 33 countries in the world that use the death penalty for people who commit drug-related crimes.

In 2015, two Brazilians were executed in the country for drug trafficking:

  • Marco Archer Cardoso Moreira, 53 years old, was executed in January 2015 by firing squad. He was arrested in 2003 with 30 pounds of cocaine hidden in a hang glider;
  • Rodrigo Muxfeldt Gularte 42, was executed in May 2015 by firing squad, 11 years after he was arrested with 6kg of cocaine on a surfboard.

Already in the second suitcase, three packages of cocaine were found, each with a net weight of 891 grams, 711 grams and 379 grams.

Bali police drug research director Kombes Iwan Eka Putra said the Brazilian was being used by drug trafficking networks in his country. According to him, the woman claimed not to know what packages were in the two suitcases.
