Indonesia’s president invites Zelenski to attend G20 summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Twitter on Wednesday that his Indonesian counterpart Joko Widondo had invited him to attend the G20 summit to be held later this year in Indonesia.

“I had a conversation with President @jokowi … I appreciate the invitation to the @ g20org summit,” Zelenski wrote in a post, referring to Indonesian President Joko Widodo, the current G20 president, under his pseudonym.

Indonesia’s presidency did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ukraine is not a member of the G20, but the group’s presidents have in the past invited countries to attend its meetings as guests.

A spokesman for Indonesia’s foreign ministry did not immediately confirm Zelenskiy’s invitation when he spoke to Reuters, but said the foreign minister had “consulted” and briefed President Widodo.

It is noted that the G20 has condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which, in its ninth week, has increased geopolitical tensions, shocked the world economy and triggered a humanitarian crisis.

Several members of the G20 even called for the exclusion of Russia and President Vladimir Putin from the leaders’ summit in Bali in November, but Indonesia refused, saying it was too early for such a decision.
