A volcano in Indonesia was active again on Tuesday (7), spewing clouds of hot ash three days after a powerful eruption that left people dead and missing.
Mount Semeru, the highest mountain on the island of Java, erupted on Saturday (4), sending a column of ash into the sky that covered the surrounding villages.
The death toll has risen to 34, while 22 are missing, according to the Indonesia Disaster Mitigation Agency.
Semeru erupted three times on Tuesday, and is one of more than 100 active volcanoes in Indonesia, in an area of high seismic activity on top of several tectonic plates known as the “Pacific Circle of Fire”.
Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Risk Mitigation, through its Twitter account, warns about the continuity of seismic activity.
“Semeru is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia,” a representative of the Semeru Volcano Observatory told Reteurs. “It will remain active”, he added.
Some residents have returned to their homes to check their belongings and cattle, but the observatory’s recommendation is that people keep a safe distance from the volcano.
