Industrial production declines in 10 of 15 places evaluated in January, says IBGE

Industrial production in the country, in January, fell in 10 of the 15 places surveyed by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). In the transition from 2021 to 2022, the sector fell by 2.4%. The data, measured monthly by the entity, were released on Tuesday (15).

In São Paulo, the largest industrial park in the country, there was a drop of 1%.

The negative result of the beginning of the year goes against the favorable performance registered in the last month of December, when the industry had an advance of 3.9%. However, in the two previous years, the category had also presented consecutive losses.

In the most recent analysis, Amazonas (-13%) had the biggest drop. Research analyst Bernardo Almeida, draws attention to the reasons that led the state to occupy the top of the table. “Amazonas eliminates almost all the expansion verified in December, of 14.3%. The beverage sector, very strong in the local industry, exerted the main negative influence on the Amazon result”, he explains.

Then, Minas Gerais (-10.7%) and Pará (-9.8%) appeared as the other two negative highlights. “In this case, it was the extractive sector that pulled the index down. Excessive rains hampered the mineral extraction operation, which is one of the main industrial activities in the state of Minas and also one of the main ones in Pará”, reinforces Almeida.

Paraná (-5.1%), Pernambuco (-5%) and Ceará (-3.8%) also had negative rates above the national result of -2.4%.

On the other hand, Mato Grosso was the federative unit with the highest growth in the sector, with 4% expansion. “Mato Grosso stands out with the advance in the food sector, having been the main positive influence on the national result. The state had its fourth consecutive positive rate and accumulated an advance of 37.6% in the period”, points out the expert.

Espírito Santo had the second highest increase, with a 2.6% increase. Bahia (1.2%), Santa Catarina (0.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.8%) complete the list of positive indicators.

In the quarterly moving average, the industry had a positive change of 0.1%. In the 12-month period, the indicator accumulates a high of 3.1%.
