Industrial production falls short of estimates at 0% in December

Industrial production in Germany showed no growth in December, as the official data published on Monday showed, suggesting that the recovery in the manufacturing sector is faltering.

Industrial production reached 0% month-on-month, has shown the federal statistical authority Destatis in figures adjusted for seasonal effects, versus the 0.3% rise expected and from 0.9% the previous month.

On an annualized basis, German industrial production fell 1% in December compared to the -2-5% registered in November.

Changes in industrial production are closely followed by the market as an important indicator of the strength of the manufacturing sector. A reading higher than expected by experts is bullish for the euro, while a lower result is bearish.
