Industrial production rises in 9 of 15 places surveyed in March, says IBGE

Industrial production increased in 9 of the 15 places surveyed from February to March, according to data from the Monthly Industrial Survey – Regional Physical Production, released this Tuesday (10) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

In São Paulo, the country’s largest industrial park, production jumped 8.4%.

The second best performance among the regions surveyed by the IBGE was Ceará, where industrial activity grew 3.8% over February.

There was also growth in the industries of Mato Grosso (2.8%), Minas Gerais (2.4%), Rio de Janeiro (2.1%), Northeast Region (1.8%) and Paraná (0.6%) , Amazonas (0.3%) and Bahia (0.1%).

On the other hand, production fell, in the comparison of March with February, in Santa Catarina (-3.8%), Pará (-3.3%), Espírito Santo (-3.0%), Pernambuco (-1.1 %), Rio Grande do Sul (-0.3%) and Goiás (-0.2%).

In relation to the quarterly moving average, according to the IBGE, seven of the 15 surveyed places showed negative rates in the quarter ended in March, especially Amazonas (-2.5%), Paraná (-2.1%) and Goiás (-1 .9%).

Comparison with March 2021

According to the IBGE, industrial production declined in 7 of the 15 places surveyed in March 2022 compared to March 2021. In São Paulo, activity was against the national average and advanced 2.9%.

In the national aggregate, industrial production fell by 2.1% compared to March 2021, as revealed by the IBGE last week. In a note, the federal agency considered that March this year (22 days) had one working day less than the same month of the previous year (23 days).

The worst performances in the comparison of March with the same month of 2021 were seen in Santa Catarina (-9.8%), Pará (-7.2%) and Amazonas (-4.1%), informed the IBGE.

“The fall in Santa Catarina was mainly pressured by the negative behavior of the machinery and equipment sectors; machines, electrical appliances and materials and textile products. In Pará, the decline was affected by falls in the extractive and metallurgy industries”, says the note released by the IBGE.

“Amazonas, on the other hand, retreated due to the retraction of computer equipment, electronic and optical products and machines and equipment.”

Also registered fall in the industrial production Pernambuco (-2.9%), Paraná (-2.8%), Espírito Santo (-2.3%) and Goiás (-1.9%).

On the other hand, in addition to São Paulo, Mato Grosso had the best performance in the comparison of March with the same month of 2021. Production jumped 22.9%. According to the IBGE, the movement was “driven, in large part, by the positive behavior coming from the activities of food and beverage products”.

There was also growth in the industries of Bahia (8.6%), Rio de Janeiro (5.4%), Ceará (4.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.0%), Northeast Region (1.8% ) and Minas Gerais (1.5%), informed the IBGE.
