Industry falls in eight of the 15 surveyed locations, says IBGE

Among the 15 regions that had their industrial production surveyed by the IBGE, eight showed a decline from October to November 2021.

This is what data from the Monthly Industrial Survey (PIM Regional) reveal, released this Friday (14), in Rio de Janeiro, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

In the period, the national index changed -0.2%. The biggest declines occurred in Amazonas (-3.5%), Ceará (-2.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (-2.2%). The biggest increases were in Mato Grosso (14.6%), Santa Catarina (5.0%) and Pará (3.5%).

According to the research manager, Bernardo Almeida, Rio de Janeiro had the greatest influence on the national result, with a drop after accumulating a gain of 1.5% in three months of positive results.

“This decline is attributed to the negative impact of the oil derivatives, metallurgy and pharmaceutical industries. Amazonas is the second biggest negative influence, mainly due to the drop in the beverage sector. Bahia had the third largest weight thanks to the low performance of the pulp and other chemical products sector”, he explained.

The fall in Bahia came after two months of high, when it accumulated a gain of 5.4%.

positive influence

The main positive influence came from São Paulo, with the expansion of 1.0% driven by the performance of the vehicle sector, which has a weight of 16.1% in the industry of São Paulo. The state accounts for 34% of national industrial production and had five consecutive months of negative results, with an accumulated loss of 7.9%.

“The state is 3.6% below the pre-pandemic level and 25.1% below its highest level, reached in March 2011,” said Almeida.

The second biggest positive influence comes from Santa Catarina, pulled by the clothing and machinery and equipment sectors, after two months of decline and accumulated loss of 6.3%. According to the IBGE, the result almost eliminates the losses of previous results in the state.

Almeida also said that the double-digit growth of Mato Grosso occurred thanks to the good performance of the food sector, with the resumption of important production units that were paralyzed and the improvement in meat exports with the end of the Chinese embargo.

“Five states are already above the pre-pandemic level. Minas Gerais is 5.2% above the level of February 2020; Rio Grande do Sul is 3.9%; Mato Grosso and Santa Catarina, both with 3.3% above; and Paraná with 1.8%”, he detailed.

In the accumulated of the year, nine of the 15 places presented high. The highlights were Santa Catarina (12.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (11.2%), Minas Gerais (10.9%) and Paraná (10.0%). In the accumulated of 12 months, ten of the 15 places surveyed had growth. The biggest fall accumulated in the period was in Bahia: -12.3%.

annual comparison

In the comparison with November 2020, ten locations had a decrease, the largest being noted in Bahia (-15.7%), Amazonas (-13.0%), Ceará (-11.1%) and Northeast Region (-10, 5%).

According to the IBGE, Bahia was affected by the sectors of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies, metallurgy and pulp, paper and paper products. In Amazonas, the pressure occurred in the activities of beverages, computer equipment, electronic and optical products.

Ceará had a drop in the production of leather artifacts, travel items and footwear and the manufacture of clothing and accessories. In the Northeast Region, there was a decline in motor vehicles, trailers and bodies and leather goods, travel articles and footwear.

The states of São Paulo (-6.9%) and Pernambuco (-5.9%) also registered more intense negative rates than the national average (-4.4%). Goiás (-3.9%), Santa Catarina (-2.6%), Paraná (-1.9%) and Minas Gerais (-0.6%) complete the list of negative indices.

The positive results compared to November last year were recorded in Espírito Santo (4.7%), Rio de Janeiro (4.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.4%), Mato Grosso (28%) and Pará (2%).
