Industry has a slight drop of 0.2% in November, 6th consecutive negative result, says IBGE

Industrial production registered a slight drop of 0.2% in November compared to October, informed the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) this Thursday (6).

In comparison with the same month of the previous year, the drop is 4.4%.

The market expected a 0.1% monthly increase and a 4.2% annual decline. In the previous month, the fall had been 0.6% compared to September.

Despite being close to stability, the number is the sixth consecutive negative registered by the sector, which accumulates a fall of 4% from June to November. Compared to the production level of February 2020, before the start of the pandemic, industrial production is still 4.3% behind.

Despite accumulating, in the 11 months of 2021, an increase of 4.7% compared to the same period of the previous year, says the institute in a note, the industry continues to move further and further away from the pre-pandemic level.

“When we look at the previous year, the results throughout 2021 are almost always positive, as the basis for comparison is low, since at the beginning of the pandemic the industry stopped its activities, with the year 2020 closing with a setback 4.5%”, says the research manager, André Macedo.

The specialist also points out that the sector still suffers from the shortage of some inputs and the consequent increase in production costs – the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic -, which affects the global industry.

Despite the negative result for the month, the IBGE highlights that only one of the four major economic categories monitored in the sector had a decline: the production of capital goods, which registered a monthly drop of 3%.

With that, this segment, eliminated the advance of 1.8% that had been registered in October.

The semi-durable and intermediate goods categories, which account for 80% of the industry average, registered stability.

The durable consumer goods sector was the only one to present a positive rate in the month, with an increase of 0.5%.

In the subcategories, the main negative influences came from rubber and plastic material products (-4.8%). The IBGE highlights that these items lost all accumulated growth (3.5%) in September and October.

It is also worth mentioning the metallurgy sector, which had a fall of 3% in the month, the third consecutive year, accumulating a loss of 7.7% from September to November.
