A passenger who had never flown a plane landed a private aircraft in Florida after a pilot mishap. The driver of a single-engine Cessna 208 “became unconscious,” the passenger told air traffic controllers Tuesday afternoon, according to LiveATC.net audio.
“I have no idea how to fly a plane,” said the passenger. He said it was “a serious situation”.
Air traffic controller Robert Morgan, a certified flight instructor, was on hiatus when a call came in from one of the planes, departing the Bahamas.
“I went there and when I got to the room, it was very busy. Officials told me that the pilot was disabled and that there were passengers on the plane. They don’t have flying experience,” Morgan told CNN .
Morgan discovered that one of the passengers had never flown a plane, but was familiar with aviation and had observed other professionals piloting it.
“He was very calm,” Morgan said. “He said, ‘I don’t know how to fly. I don’t know how to stop this thing if I can land on the runway.”
The instructor found a photo of the dashboard of the Cessna model airplane, which he had never flown, and began to give instructions to his new pupil.
He made the decision to steer the aircraft to the region’s largest airport, helping the passenger position the plane close to Palm Beach International Airport “so it would have a bigger target.”
The landing was “a 10,” according to Morgan.
