Inflation and high prices affect Brazilian consumption routine

Brazil recorded the highest inflation for the month of March since 1994, 1.62%, and in the first three months of the year the price increase reached 64%, more than half of the ceiling of the government’s target for the whole year of 2022.

A survey of CNN shows that since the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020, until February of this year, supermarket purchases became 31% more expensive. Of the 20 items that pushed up prices, 19 are food items.

In addition to Brazil, countries around the world also recorded high food prices, caused, among other factors, by the war in Ukraine and the pandemic.

Other factors also contributed to high inflation, including electricity. The electricity bill has become 33% more expensive in recent years, but as of this month this sequence of increases may end with the end of the water scarcity tariff flag.

To talk about inflation and high prices in Brazil, Alexandre Espirito Santo, economist at Órama and professor at IBMEC, and Fernando Nakagawa, director of the CNN Brasil Business, which will talk about what can happen with the expected drop in electricity costs.
