Inflation brings down the purchasing power of 90% of professions, points out CNC

About 90% of Brazilian professions recorded a drop in purchasing power between March 2021 and the same month this year. The villain: inflation, which exceeded 11.7% in the period, according to the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA).

The data are part of an exclusive survey by the National Confederation of Commerce in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC), carried out at the request of the CNN and released this Tuesday (17). For the elaboration of the study, the 140 most representative professions in the country were considered, which encompass 72% of the population in the labor market.

Bus drivers and janitors were the occupations that lost the most purchasing power between March 2021 and 2022, according to the CNC survey. According to the entity’s economist, Fábio Bentes, both careers have been deteriorating for a few years and were even more damaged during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The professionals who were most affected according to the survey were janitors, with a loss of 16% in purchasing power, and bus drivers, with a loss of 3.9%

“Inflation generates a corrosive process in our salaries. We cannot only assess how much maturities have grown, but how much they have risen considering inflation. For you to have a real increase in income, your salary needs to break the inflation barrier. In practice, currently, we can say that only one in ten professions in Brazil can beat inflation”, said the study’s coordinator, economist Fábio Bentes.

On the other hand, driven by the needs generated by the pandemic, clinical physicians and information technology (IT) professionals are among the few careers in Brazil that have had a salary adjustment that has overcome inflationary pressure. Health professionals had a 16% rise in monthly remuneration, while the salary of Information Systems programmers rose approximately 4%, after discounting inflation.

Clinical physician, with an increase of 16.1% above inflation, leads the professions with the best results. Next comes the input and output controller for supplies and machines (+12.5%), stockist (+9.4%), higher education teacher in early childhood education (+6.1%), information systems programmer (+4.3%) and machine operator in agricultural production (+0.1).
