Inflation in Austria rose to 7.7% in May, the highest level since April 1976, the country’s statistical office said today.
Compared to April, inflation increased by half a percentage point.
Tombayas Thomas, director general of the Austrian statistical authority, attributed the negative record to rising prices for energy, fuel and food.
Last Tuesday, the Austrian government unveiled a package of long-term measures to fight inflation. These include benefits increases for the unemployed and other vulnerable social groups.
The cost of the anti-inflation package is estimated at € 6 billion this year and € 28 billion by 2026.
