Inflation is more serious when it hits food, says economist

In an interview with CNN this Friday (8), the economist and professor at FGV Gesner Oliveira commented on the numbers of the IPCA (Broad Consumer Price Index) – which measures the country’s official inflation – released this Friday by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) this Friday.

According to Oliveira, when the price increase affects food, the situation becomes more serious.

“When inflation hits a lot, food is relatively more serious, stronger, hurts more those with low income, for whom food weighs more”, he evaluated.

For the economist, the worst of the index is over, since there was no “rate explosion”.

“The worst happened in the sense that there was no explosion in rates and the projections for this year are lower than what was inflation in 2021. In this sense, there was an improvement, the problem is that the level of inflation is still high”, stated.

According to the IBGE, the index was 0.67% in June, after a variation of 0.47% registered in the previous month. In the year, the accumulated inflation is 5.49% and, in the last 12 months, 11.89%, informed the institute.

The increase was mainly influenced by the increase of 0.8% in the food and beverage group, which has great weight in the general index (21.26%).
