Inflation slows to 0.54% in January, but is highest for the month since 2016

The IPCA (Extended Consumer Price Index) — which measures the country’s official inflation — was 0.54% in January, compared to a 0.73% rise recorded in the previous month. Food and beverages had the biggest impact in the period.

Despite the deceleration in the index, the value was the highest for the month since 2016, informed the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) this Wednesday (9).

In the last 12 months, the indicator accumulates a high of 10.38%, above the 10.06% registered in the 12 immediately previous months.

Market analysts had expected a rise of 0.55% in the month and 10.39% in 12 months.

The IPCA ended 2021 at 10.06%, the highest value in six years, and above the ceiling of the target established by the National Monetary Council (CMN) for that year, of 5.25%. For 2022, the target ceiling is 5%.

Greater impacts

The biggest influence on the January result came from the group food and beverages, with the greatest impact on the index, of 0.23 percentage point. Within this group, food at home weighed more, with a rise of 1.44%, led by meat (1.32%) and fruit (3.40%).

The institute also highlights the ground coffee prices (4.75%), which rose for the 11th consecutive month, accumulating a high of 56.87% in the last 12 months. Other highlights were carrots (27.64%), onions (12.43%), potatoes (9.65%) and tomatoes (6.21%).

On the low side of this group are the prices of rice (-2.66%), whole chicken (-0.85%) and chicken pieces (-0.71%).

Of the nine groups evaluated by the IBGE, eight were discharged. The only drop was registered by transport, the group with the greatest weight of the IPCA, which dropped 0.11%, after rising 0.58% in December.

The IBGE explains that this decrease is mainly a consequence of the fall in the prices of air tickets (-18.35%) and fuel (-1.23%). In addition to gasoline (-1.14%), there was also a drop in the prices of ethanol (-2.84%) and vehicle gas (-0.86%).

“The drop in airline tickets can be explained by the seasonal component” explains research analyst André Filipe Almeida, in a note. “Regarding fuels, the negative adjustments applied to refineries by Petrobras in December help to understand the decline in prices in January,” he says.

In addition, diesel oil (2.38%) was the only one to rise in January. Other negative highlights were transport by application (-17.96%) and vehicle rental (-3.79%).

In the housing group (0.16%), prices decelerated in relation to the previous month (0.74%), mainly due to the decrease in electricity (-1.07%), although the Scarcity flag remains in effect. Water, says the IBGE, which adds R$ 14.20 to the electricity bill for every 100 kWh consumed. “There were also changes in PIS/Cofins, ICMS and public lighting tariffs in some areas surveyed”, adds the institute.
