The lack of flexibility in labor rules helps put a brake on economic growth in Brazil, according to Marina Helena Santos, economist and former director of the Privatization Program at the Ministry of Economy’s Privatization Secretariat.
“We have a rigid, not very flexible job market in Brazil. This means that every time there is a shock like the pandemic, and companies have to send employees away or take other more drastic measures to be able to maintain a business, the return is always very difficult,” he said in an interview with CNN this Saturday. (30).
Unemployment in the country has shown recovery from the worst period of the coronavirus crisis, but 12 million people are still looking for an opportunity.
“Clearer and simpler rules would help get people out of this situation,” he says.
