What procedure was performed?

On June 23, Aline, who lived in Brasília, received polymethyl methacrylate, also known as PMMA, injections into her buttocks at a clinic in Goiânia. The procedure is done to increase the volume of the buttocks.

According to delegate Débora Melo, from the State Department for the Repression of Crimes Against Consumers in Goiás, the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) approves the procedure for cases of people who have consequences caused by AIDS or polio treatment.

The influencer paid R$3,000 for the procedure.

What is PMMA

In an interview with CNN doctor Eliane Palermo, member of the Regional Council of Medicine of São Paulo (Cremesp) and the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) warned that PMMA can remain in the body for years without causing symptoms until it triggers an inflammatory reaction. She considers the excessive use of the substance for aesthetic purposes to be a “silent epidemic”.

PMMA is a liquid plastic polymer that is implanted in the body and is not absorbed. According to the doctor, this substance can remain “quiet” for a while, but it can cause serious complications later.

“It can immediately cause a vascular problem and then cause a pulmonary embolism, but when it is silent, when it remains in your body for years without being able to be removed, these are plastic polymers, like liquid plastic, that will remain implanted in the body and it can remain there quietly until it has an inflammatory reaction,” he explained.

Eliane advocated much stricter regulation for the use of PMMA or even its ban.

What happened after the procedure

Aline’s PMMA application took place on June 23. On the same day, Aline returned from Goiânia to the Federal District, where she lived. According to Elisangela Maria Lima, the influencer’s aunt, her niece had a fever about three days after the procedure.

The patient contacted the professional who administered the injection, who prescribed some medications. She took these medications, but the pain did not go away. And she began to feel a lot of abdominal pain. And then her husband took her to a private hospital,” says Elisangela, who did not provide the name of the establishment to which Aline had been taken.

At the hospital, her aunt says, Aline was given medication and released. “On the way home, she fainted. And then her husband took her to HRAN [Hospital Regional de Asa Norte]. When she arrived at HRAN, they admitted her immediately,” she recalls.

A day later, she was transferred to a private hospital in Brasília, where her death was confirmed around 9 pm on the 2nd.

Who applied the PMMA?

According to investigations, the person responsible for the procedure was businesswoman Grazielly da Silva Barbosa, who was the owner of the Ame-se clinic, in the capital of Goiás.

Grazielly presented herself as a biomedical scientist, but according to the police, she had no training in the field. Police officer Débora Melo says that the businesswoman studied medicine in Paraguay, but dropped out before graduating. “What she told us is that she studied medicine up to the third semester at a college in Paraguay, but she dropped out three years ago,” says the police officer.

“In addition, what she did were independent courses in the area of aesthetics. She listed some courses that she took, but did not present a diploma or certification. So, she is a person who does not have any higher education in the health area and did not present any technical qualification certification to perform these procedures,” he added.

The businesswoman is arrested and her clinic is closed because it did not have a health permit.

Lack of information about risks

According to the delegate, Aline was not properly advised about the risks of the procedure she underwent.

“At no time [a dona da clínica] explained to Aline what the real risks of that gluteal bioplasty, that is, that increase in the glutes, would be. She simply said that it was a calm, very simple procedure, that she had already done on other patients and the result had been great”, said Débora.

According to investigations, the influencer did not undergo any tests before the procedure. “When we carry out inspections in clinics, it is common for us to seize patient records. There [na clínica Ame-se] There were no patient records. In other words, the person simply arrived, paid, had the procedure done and left. There were no patient records to find out if the patient had any previous clinical condition that could cause a problem after the procedure. No prior exams were requested when performing the procedure.”

Infractions investigated

According to the police chief, three infractions have been found to have been committed by the clinic owner. The first is the illegal practice of medicine, as she “performs several procedures that are authorized only for the medical profession.”

The second infraction, provided for in the Consumer Protection Code, is to perform a highly dangerous service, contrary to the determination of the competent authority.

The third irregularity allegedly committed by Grazielly was a crime against consumer relations. “It is prohibited to mislead consumers regarding the nature or quality of services or products. She misled consumers because she claimed to have qualifications that she did not have, because she is not a biomedical scientist. And secondly, because she did not explain to patients the real risks of the procedures she was performing.”

In addition to these three offenses, the police chief emphasizes that an investigation is underway to determine whether there was a crime of bodily harm followed by death. “We need to wait for the expert report regarding Aline to be completed. Because the death certificate came out as a death to be clarified. So we need to know if there is any way to prove the link between the death and the cosmetic procedure she underwent.”

A CNN tries to contact Grazielly da Silva Barbosa’s defense.
